Infrared Stories I

Infrared Stories II - Howard Park

Infrared Stories II - Pithlachascotte River

Infrared photography is nothing new, but it is a photographic technique that has just recently captured my imagination. The possibilities of creating unique and extraordinary images with today's more capable and powerful digital cameras along with even more impressive digital software tools like PhotoPaint and PhotoShop make for some 'phantastic' realms of expression.
IR presents a view of the world, that as my friend Jill Love aptly called one of her prints, Winter Illusion. It make the plants and greenery of landscape look fluffy with frost or laden with snow. Clear skies and water often go black depending on the wavelength of infrared filter that is used.

Faces take on an ethereal porcelain doll-like quality. Skin becomes alabaster, and hair like strands of flax. I intend to use IR to augment my poetry or to in some cases I hope, mesh the image and the words into one entity. Here is my first shot taken with a Nikon Coolpix 950.

Unlike the green glow images generated by Infrared spectrum beams, as seen in night vision camcorders or hi-tech night vision goggles, infrared photos are taken in sunlight, with varying degrees of filtering which blocks most visible light wavelengths. They cover the spectrum of IR light, usually between the 680 and 800 nanometers (nm) frequency. Different wavelengths of IR light are allowed to pass to the film or in the case of digital cameras, to the camera's sensor. The result is an often dramatic image that can vary from a highly contrasted gray-scale to a range of dark ruby reds. Depending on the subject matter, i.e. face, tree, or sky, each differs in the amount of reflection or absorption of light in that wavelength. Got it? Doesn't matter. Get a filter if your camera can field it and go play. The results can be awesome. The beauty can be further enhanced by colorization or by increased digital filtering of the images. (See Etan Rozin's photo-link ahead) Carl Schofield has also obtained some excellent results in his wide range of IR experimentation.

There are many great sites on IR filters, their effects, where to obtain them, how-to pages, and of galleries of photography available for perusal and/or purchase. Three great sites are technical and resource information are Infrared Resources (also good info on filters and where to get them, DP-FWIW )

Excellent galleries are Carl Schofield's
Beyond Red page and his galleries at Infrared Landscapes .

Also check out Chris Maher and Larry Berman's pages at InfraRed Dreams
Caution:Site contains artistic nudity). These links will also be on the Links page.

Check out other examples of what can be done with colorization techniques at the Etan Rozin's IR gallery page on Pbase.
